When it comes to smart home technology, TVs are no exception. With the wide range and variety of affordable models available, I wanted to find out if smart TVs could work without an internet connection.

A smart TV can be used without an internet connection; however, without the internet, you lose access to all the device’s advanced smart features, like connecting to your favorite streaming apps. 

In other words, smart TVs will function like a standard TV when it is not connected to the internet. In this article, we’ll cover which features smart TVs can access with and without an internet connection and how to troubleshoot connectivity issues with your device. 

How Does a Smart TV Connect to the Internet?

It’s worth discussing how smart TVs connect to the internet to better understand what features require that functionality. Let’s start with what you’ll need to get connected:

  • A smart TV with built-in internet functionality (most connections use 802.11ac for Wi-Fi)An internet connection (Ethernet or Wireless)

Troubleshooting Connectivity Issues

So you’ve decided to purchase a smart TV, but you’re experiencing some connection issues. Let’s take a look at some common troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Weak Connection: If you’re having intermittent connection issues, try updating your TV’s firmware. Ensure there are no other devices nearby interfering with your connection (microwaves, phones, monitors, etc.)No Connection: If your TV has the appropriate port, try hardwiring your connection via an Ethernet cable to isolate the issue. When in doubt, try resetting your internet router.

Smart TV Features that Require Internet

Though smart TVs can be used extensively without an internet connection, some features require you to be connected:

Smart TV Features that Don’t Require Internet

The following smart TV features do not require an internet connection: 

  • Streaming Local Media: You can share photos and videos using a USB stick (assuming your TV allows USB connections) without an internet connection.Watching Media: Without an internet connection, you can still watch media on your TV like Blu-ray, DVDs, etc.Connect Devices: As long as you have the appropriate connections, you can hook up various devices such as DVD players, Blu-ray players, Satellite TV, etc.

Even though some features require an internet connection to work properly, you can still use the TV for many of your multimedia needs. 

How to Watch TV without Internet

If you can’t get your smart TV to connect to your home’s internet or don’t have the ability to connect the device to your network, don’t worry; you can still manage to watch your favorite shows in a variety of ways.

Setting Up Apple TV

To connect your Apple TV streaming device to your TV:

  • Connect your Apple TV to the TV using an HDMI cable, and plug the device into the nearest power outlet. Turn on your TV and select the appropriate HDMI input for the device. There will be a series of on-screen instructions you will need to follow to configure the device’s internet connection and other settings.Sign in to your Apple account.

Stream from Mobile Devices

The Google Chromecast is a unique device that you can use to stream content directly from your phone, tablet, or laptop to your TV. Simply plug it into your TV, download the Google Home app on your mobile device, and follow the instructions there to set up your device.  After setting up, you can use your mobile device to cast videos, movies, pictures, and more (Source: Google Support). 

If you own an Apple device, you may be able to use your phone’s Airplay feature to connect to your smart TV. However, this feature will only be available with AirPlay2-compatible smart TVs or Apple TVs.
