When it comes to smart home security devices, the ability to integrate different models can be a selling point for many. Blink offers a wide range of devices with competitive features designed to keep your home safe and secure. But do newer models, such as the Blink XT2, still work with its predecessor, the XT?

The Blink XT and XT2 are universally compatible and can connect to the same Sync Module. Though there are some differences between the models, their features and capabilities provide seamless integration.

Blink has designed its system to be backward compatible with all existing and previous devices connected to a single Sync Module. So if you’re already a Blink user and you’re looking to expand or upgrade your security system, you’re in luck. This article will compare the XT and XT2 models and provide tips for using your devices in tandem.

The Blink XT and XT2 offer competitive features designed to provide secure and reliable monitoring for your property. Additionally, they are both weatherproof and can be conveniently mounted outdoors or indoors for various applications. Let’s look at some of the differences between each of the devices:

Both models have comparable features with some key differences. Though the XT doesn’t have two-way audio, it still has a built-in mic allowing for hands-free control with Alexa.

Given this information, it’s not surprising that both models can work together seamlessly. Because both models can work in conjunction using a single Sync Module, let’s take a closer look at connecting multiple devices with your system.

Connecting Multiple Devices to Sync Module

Blink cameras, including the XT and XT2, can work in unison by connecting to a single Sync Module. The Blink Sync Module connects to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and allows your Blink devices to communicate with each other and Blink servers. With the Sync Module, users can manage all of their Blink devices from a single account via the Blink Home Monitor App.

Each Blink Sync Module can connect to 10 total devices (not including the module) and can communicate with units up to 100 feet away in any direction. If you’re looking to add more than ten devices to your system, you will need to purchase an additional Sync Module.

Blink makes the process of connecting devices, in this case, an XT and XT2, intuitive and user friendly.

Here are some steps to get you started connecting multiple devices (Note: you will need to have the Blink Home Monitor app downloaded and installed to add and configure your cameras):

  • First, open the Blink app and press the “+” button (near the top right) to add a new device. You will then be prompted to select the type of system you are adding. Assuming you’ve already connected your Sync Module, select “Blink Wireless Camera.”Next, you will be asked for the serial number of the corresponding device. For the XT and XT2, the serial number sticker is located under the back cover in the battery compartment. After you have completed these initial steps, the app will walk through the onboarding process for your newly connected device(s).

Adding an XT and XT2 to your system can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. This process is universal for adding Blink cameras, so you can add different models, like the Indoor and Outdoor cameras, to function together using the same Sync Module.

Managing XT and XT2 with the Home Monitor App

With the Blink Home Monitor app, you can easily manage multiple devices from a single interface.

During the initial camera onboarding process, you will be prompted to name the camera. If you’re using more than one device, in this case, the XT and XT2, it’s important to name them in relation to where they are placed. For example, you could name your XT at the front of your property “Front Door,” so you can quickly access the appropriate camera when you’re using the app.

In Summary

Being unable to connect different models from the same company can be frustrating for many smart home security users. Blink, however, provides users the ability to continue using their system, even if they decide to expand or upgrade their existing security cameras. Their devices are backward compatible and can be connected in a matter of minutes, all on a single Sync Module.
