Windows 10 surpassed Windows 7 as the most used operating system in the US for the first time ever. According to Stat Counter, Windows 10 became the most popular operating system in the United States on May 29th, with 28.82% of the market share.

The US now joins some other regions worldwide where Windows 10 is also the most popular operating system, like Western Europe, Australia, and some other smaller markets. As for other operating systems used in the US, Windows 7 is now slightly behind Windows 10 with 28.65% of the market share, with OS X in third place with 16.16%.

We’ve received this information from Twitter, where David Storey, Edge developer at Microsoft, tweeted it to his followers:

Yesterday was the 1st day Win 10 was top OS by usage in North America (SC). Also 1st in North Europe & Australasia pic.twitter.com/c2oXiwziAy

Windows 7, however, is still the most popular operating system worldwide. Considering Windows 10’s (forced) adoption rate, this will change in the future. A huge part in this plays Microsoft’s effort to bring Windows 10 on as many computers at possible, an effort a lot of people recognize as inappropriate as they basically feel forced to upgrade to Windows 10.

Microsoft’s goal is to have Windows 10 installed on more than 1 billion computers. Judging by how things are going now, with all these pushes to upgrade, various cross-platform integration (Xbox One and Windows 10 Mobile), improved performance for gamers, and more, Microsoft will definitely hit that goal at some point in the near future.

Once again, many people won’t be satisfied by their migration to Windows 10, but they’ll practically be left without a choice — especially if we know that new hardware won’t support older versions of Windows.
