Windows 10 Build 10586 Removes Apps Not Coming From The Windows Store Without Prompting Users

So far you know that we’ve talked about plenty of issues caused by Windows 10 Build 10586, or Windows 10 November Update as it’s also known. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t install, as it brings a wide range of great improvements, as well.

In this story, however, we want to further discuss yet another problem which has been reported on Reddit but also in various other places. As it turns out, there have been reports that after upgrading to Windows 10 build 10586, various apps which weren’t installed through the Windows Store were removed by Windows without prompting the user.

There are quite a few users who have been saying that they have been affected by this problem. A couple are saying that the CPU-Z and the Speccy apps have been removed, and it seems the reason was because it was causing various BSODs.

Of course, it’s quite annoying that the single fix which Microsoft was able to find was to remove the apps, instead of trying to figure out what exactly was the conflict. After all, these aren’t malware or spyware, and are only meant to help Windows users with extended functionalities. While these problems affect only a few users, it’s still annoying to see apps being removed without your consent.

Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 also caused apps to be uninstalled, so while this behavior isn’t exactly new, it can be quite annoying for those affected. One user puts it very explicitly:

A better solution would be for Microsoft to just block the apps instead of removing them. But there are other users who believe that what Microsoft is doing is actually helping them:

Would’ve been 100% fine with a warning. However, just blindly removing an app is a really poor practice. I know Win 10 isn’t really used at an enterprise level such as Win 7, but could you imagine if your office user base suddenly had AutoCAD 2013 removed on a bulk update? It’s a minor irritation to us, but it could be disastrous in the right environment.

I have had my system freeze because of a HW monitoring program, more than once on Win 10. The programs were removed for a very good reason IMO. Core temp got my ram usage to go to 32GB in win 10, I have 16GB installed. Yeah, unless the program is specifically updated with this OS in mind, it might cause a catastrophic memory leak, or BSOD. A warning would have been nice yes, but if they just run a scrip that automatically detects whether an app will work, or possibly break the OS, they would have to go trough literally thousands of programs before an update is launched.
