For some users who’ve updated their OS, that means there were no Shutdown, Restart, Sleep, Hibernate options in the Power Options menu. Instead, the Start Menu offered only the sign out option.
Here’s how user Krahnin describes these issues on Microsoft’s forum:
Power options are unavailable on the Creators Update
- Run a series of scans in Command Prompt
- Tweak the Registry
- Reset PC to factory settings
Solution 1 – Run a series of scans in Command Prompt
Go to Start > type cmd > launch Command Prompt as an Admin
Type the following commands and hit Enter after each one:
sfc /scannow
powercfg –restoredefaultschemes
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Solution 2 – Tweak the Registry
If there are still no Power options in the Start Menu, you can perform the following steps to fix the issue:
After updating to the Window’s 10 Creator’s update, clicking on the power icon from start results in the message: “There are currently no power options available“. […]
Please advise. Currently the only workaround is to shutdown/reboot via CMD or Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
- Open the Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in Search and clicking Enter.
- Go to the following settings and double-click on it to open the configuration box: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar
- Select “Not Configured” or “Disabled” and click Apply.
- Exit after completing the steps above.
However, if you are using Windows 10 Home, the Group Policy Editor is not available. But you can run regedit to open the Registry Editor and go to the following registry key:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
- Ensure that a value named NoClose exists with a value of 0.
- Reboot your PC and check whether the Power Options are now back.
Solution 3 – Reset PC to factory settings
Finally, if none of the previous steps worked for you, we can only suggest resetting your PC to factory settings. We are well aware that this will cost you some time, as you’ll need to reconfigure settings and reinstall applications from scratch. However, this might be your only option as the error is a rather critical one.
If you’re not sure how to reset your PC to factory settings, follow the steps we provided below:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Open Recovery from the left pane.
- Expand the Reset this PC option and run it.
- Choose to save your files and continue with the process.
