Microsoft released a stable version of the new Microsoft Edge six months ago. That’s old news already as it has just started to roll out the Windows 10 May 2020 update with the latest Edge browser.
- The Chromium-based Edge browser has passed the reliability test and is finally shipped with Windows 10.Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 KB4559309 to bring the latest Edge browser on May 2020 update (version 2004) computers. In order to quickly install the standalone package, do note that rebooting your computer is mandatory for all Windows 10 Insiders.Take your time to find plenty of other breaking stories around Microsoft from our News Hub.
More precisely, Windows 10 KB4559309 is automatically made available to a handful of Windows 10 Insiders as we are speaking.
This is clearly only the first phase of a gradual rollout. Therefore, only a small group of users are privileged to get the new browser right away.
Moreover, no Chromium-based Edge version will ever be automatically made available for those running Windows 10 Education or Enterprise. In such a case, your only chance is to download the browser manually.
How can I install standalone Edge package?
- Firstly, you need to right-click on the Start button. You may also use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + X to open the Power User Menu.
- Go to Shut down or sign out next and select it.
- Finally, select Restart from the popup menu.
- Windows 10 will automatically display the Welcome to Microsoft Edge greeting message.
A reboot is mandatory in order to install the standalone package. After you apply the above steps, Windows 10 should immediately launch the latest Edge browser.
If you happen to be an Insider on the RP Ring with Microsoft’s Edge browser installed on your PC, you won’t even notice the change.
However, do keep in mind that you won’t be able to uninstall the browser if you install it via Windows Update.
Chromium-based Edge browser availability details
Windows 10 version 1909 (November 2019 update) users are also among the lucky ones as the latest Edge browser is already available via Insider channels.
As for the others, the actual rollout will continue to expand to everyone with the Windows 10 May 2020 update in the Release Preview Ring.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has also revealed its intentions to start the rollout to the general public on May 28.
