Windows 10 Redstone 2 First Builds Will Bring Structural Improvements

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is finally here and rolling out to users all over the world. Soon, it will be available for phones, as well, but that’s another story and users are more interested in what Microsoft is preparing for its OS. Users who join the Windows Insider program by Microsoft have access to early builds of the Windows OS and their feedback was very useful in the development of Redstone 1. But now we’re talking about Redstone 2 and soon Microsoft will start releasing first builds which, unfortunately, won’t bring new features, as the company is focusing on “structural improvements.”

Insiders are currently preparing for new Windows 10 Development Branch builds, which will be released a few weeks after for mobile devices. On the Windows 10 Feedback Hub, Microsoft gave Insiders an idea of what will be brought in the upcoming builds of Redstone, mentioning that they won’t include “any big noticeable changes or new features.”

However, Microsoft has explained that the upcoming builds of Redstone 2 will be “…focusing on making some structural improvements to OneCore. If you recall – OneCore is the shared core of Windows across PC, tablet, phone, IoT, Hololens and Xbox. It is essentially the heart of Windows. We’re doing some code refactoring and other engineering work to make sure OneCore is optimally structured for teams to start checking in new features and improvements in a few months.”

Insiders should expect “more bugs and other issues that could be slightly more painful for some people to live with”, so they should not be frustrated once the early builds will become available. If they won’t be too happy about the performance of those builds, they will be able to downgrade to the Slow or Release Preview rings, as they will install more stable builds. There is also another option – to receive Insider Preview rings entirely.
