With all the new features available for mobile devices, some tend to forget that handsets were originally designed as efficient communication tools. While mobile devices are becoming more and more proficient with handling desktop grade tasks, this year’s WinHEC event showcased some interesting upcoming features focused on mobile communication.

To be more specific, Intel announced that it is preparing to provide support for 5G connectivity with its upcoming series of PCs. This will be achieved through Intel’s Global Modem initiative. It will target not only PCs but also hybrid devices provided they run Microsoft’s Windows OS.

While the 5G initiative is intriguing, there was another announcement pertaining to PC cellular communications. The other announcement came directly from Microsoft and was about eSIM support. The technology behind eSIMs will allow mobile users to seamlessly change their data plans or even swap carriers by accessing a website. Units that have eSIMs will not be able to remove them as there are completely integrated into the digital infrastructure of the device. Instead of having a SIM with pre-loaded data, users will be able to program their eSIMs and choose carriers and options regarding their communications preferences.

The point of eSIM technology is to bring the user in total control of their cellular communications, directly adjusting any involved category such as price or data traffic.

The WinHEC 2016 event left us with the sensation of a strong partnership between Microsoft and Intel with users expecting multiple collaborations between the two. It seems that Microsoft will provide optimized support on their Windows 10 platform for Intel’s new hardware releases. In return, they will cover an array of new features and capabilities. It will be interesting to see where this will lead us and how cellular communications will evolve within the PC spectrum.
