The official TripAdvisor app for Windows 8 has been released in the Windows Store at the beginning of this month and now, a new update to the Bing Smart Search includes its database, which means you can search without having to open the app
Earlier we have given a short but useful review to the official TripAdvisor app for Windows 8 and Windows RT users, as it was launched without too much fanfare so many users didn’t even know it was there for more than two weeks now. Probably to shed a little more light but also to announce a new feature, Brandon LeBlanc made official today on the Windows Experience Blog some changes to the Bing Smart Search.
And these changes include integration with TripAdvisor’s huge database, which means you will be able to search straight form the Search bar, without having to open the app. It’s very useful, but I wonder whether this won’t slow down the Charm or the Search bar, as some users have reported. Personally, I still can’t digest the fact that there are annoying ads present, and I hope Microsoft will disable them by default, without having to search for workarounds. Brandon details further:
In a separate post, the Bing Team has also announced the new features, saying the following:
You can use the Search charm in Windows 8.1 to share out content from TripAdvisor like search results for flights and hotels and more. Bing is rolling out updates to Smart Search in Windows 8.1 and Bing.com that brings the ability to quickly and easily compare hotel prices from the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor is one of the first apps to integrate with Bing Smart Search, which enables you to click directly into the app when it is relevant to whatever you’re searching for.

By integrating directly into Bing Smart Search, the updated TripAdvisor app designed specifically for Windows 8 will now show up as a result for relevant searches. With just a single tap or click, you will now have instant access to all of the great travel-related content and tools TripAdvisor is known for. Bing knows that an app is often the best way to take action, so bringing apps like TripAdvisor right alongside search results enables you to discover the tools you need to compare and book the best hotels tailored to your needs. When you use Bing Smart Search in Windows 8.1, content such as hotel ratings and reviews from within the TripAdvisor app are presented within results to give you an at-a-glance view of what’s available when you open the app itself.
This is all nice but I have to wonder whether the Bing Smart Search will not become cluttered. But if you plan on using your Windows 8 to make research for your travels, then this is a much welcome news.
