Fresh new Windows 8.1 problem here! I know, nothing exciting…A user reports that Windows 8.1 not showing ‘Settings’ results in Smart Search when ‘Everything’ is selected. More details below.

The Smart Search charm has some problems in Windows 8.1 and we have previously reported that for some users, it is very slow or with lags. Now, a new problem is reported by an user; he says the following:

I can understand his frustration very well. Ever since Microsoft removed the good old start button, most of us Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users are using the Smart Search bar heavily, not only for finding files, but for accessing certain settings, as well.

The problem is exactly as described- Settings results are not being included in smart search results when ‘Everything’ is selected. For example if I type ‘uninstall a program’ I would expect to see the Uninstall A Program setting show up. If I change the filter from ‘Everywhere’ to “Settings’ it will then show up.

This machine was upgraded from Windows 8 with the option to “Keep Applications and Settings”. I’m wondering if it is some registry key or setting which is kept from the 8.0 causing this. Running this same search on another test machine which received a fresh 8.1 install works perfectly as expected.
