According to the analyst company Telsyte, Microsoft may have given up on the phone market, but the company still has a solid chance on the tablet market.

The company recently predicted that Windows tablets, including the Surface Pro, would overtake Android tablets by the end of the year. These estimates refer to the Australian tablet market only. However, chances are this becomes a general trend worldwide. Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, and Lenovo are the top four tablet manufacturers in the first half of 2017 and account for more than 80% units sold.

2-in-1 tablets account for a third of tablet sales in the first half of 2017. It seems that Windows-based devices have benefited from the merging of PC and tablet features.

The AR experience

Telsyte also has some bad news, predicting that the release of Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore will encourage smartphone upgrades and will have a positive effect on tablet sales. The statistics show that more than 40% of Australian tablet users have already had a taste of AR apps such as Layar, Pokemon Go and others. Telsyte research shows that more Australian consumers would prefer using AR on tablets rather than as standalone headsets.

Regarding Microsoft, very few mixed reality apps have been announced for Windows tablets. The platform is not able yet to benefit from the cross-over between tablet platforms and phone.
