Greg Sullivan, Windows Mixed Reality’s communication director, confirmed that SteamVR support would not be available on launch day of Windows Mixed Reality. In other words, it may take a while before Windows Mixed Reality users will actually be able to run content from SteamVR on their newly purchased headsets.

Microsoft’s new Windows Mixed Reality headsets

After teaming up with a few companies and studios to bring a vast amount of content to its Windows Mixed Reality platform, Microsoft is launching Windows Mixed Reality headsets with more companies including Lenovo, Dell, and Acer on October 17 alongside the much-expected launch of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Most excitingly, Microsoft is teaming up with Vive to bring support for SteamVR to Windows Mixed Reality, an event that would allow users to experience VR content from Steam on their Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Support for SteamVR not available on launch day

Unfortunately, on launch day support for SteamVR won’t be available, but companies are currently working on integration. We’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can enjoy running content from Steam on the new headsets, however.

Microsoft announced many of software partners the company will work with, but the lack of support for SteamVR’s vast catalog made the whole thing and entire launch event less attractive. Users will try their best to be patient for a few more months and wait to see if the initial plan will materialize as promised before purchasing headsets, a major setback for Microsoft.

The company shouldn’t be surprised if things don’t go as planned because it’s essential that when you buy a product, you get it for what it currently provides instead of getting it hoping that it will offer something more in the future.
