Microsoft announced earlier this year that it won’t release Windows 10 to devices currently running Windows RT, including company’s in-house Surface RT and Surface 2 tablets, but it looks like this OS isn’t ‘dead’ yet, as Microsoft prepares a new update for September.

Announcement of the new update doesn’t mean that two Windows RT tablets will get the upgrade to Windows 10, because Microsoft will only provide some improvements to the current Windows 8.1 RT operating system. It’s too early to tell what improvements, but head of the Windows Insider program, Gabe Aul, confirmed that the new update for Windows 8.1 RT, reportedly called “Windows 8.1 RT Update 3” will arrive sometime in September. Although Microsoft didn’t discuss about details of this update, it could involve rolling out some built-in Windows 10 apps to Windows RT.

Windows RT was introduced in October 2012, together with Windows 8, while Steve Ballmer still was the CEO of Microsoft. Upon its release, the company said that it will be the best way to enjoy the power of the new operating system on tablet devices, but since the company changed its policy about operating systems for tablet, Windows RT never lived its glory.

Another huge, and probably the biggest setback for Windows RT was the fact that it didn’t run desktop software, so it was limited to the apps offered in Windows Store. And due the lack of such apps, many customers didn’t want to buy devices running this OS. Manufacturers also weren’t interested in making Windows RT-compatible devices, leaving Windows RT nearly forgotten by the wider audience.
