Nadella was never quite a big fan of the efforts made by Steve Ballmer to save Windows Phone by purchasing Nokia’s handset division.

The company claimed to be committed to first-party devices including phones, but never really followed up with some real action, eventually canceling the flagship Windows Phone for 2014, following that with unexciting handsets in 2015 and nothing of interest in 2016.

Windows 10 Mobile’s dead end

Microsoft’s phone revenue is now down another $730 million and the company confirmed that it has no more money left in its phone business, according to Mary Jo Foley. Paul Thurrott also confirmed an end to Redmond’s phone business by June 2017. So, Microsoft seems to be putting Windows 10 Mobile development in maintenance mode and the Windows Phone market will definitely sink even further following this move.

It appears that the years and years of mismanagement in the Windows phone segment have indeed taken their toll. Microsoft did not actually understand the demands of the mobile market and this has constantly reduced its phones’ market share.

As a quick reminder, Microsoft has already stopped selling a series of Lumia models and got rid of its Windows 10 Lumia stock. All the signs indicated that Microsoft was indeed planning to wind down its Windows 10 Mobile segment, despite the company’s statements that said otherwise.

Rumors suggest that maybe one day Microsoft will indeed release a business focused device, not a consumer phone. However, this phone should land in 2018 at the earliest.
