Microsoft removed the Downloads folder from Disk Cleanup

Well, Microsoft added a note in their blog post about the Insider Preview Build 19018 specifying that they deleted the Downloads folder from Disk Cleanup based on feedback from users.

The change happened with the latest Windows 10 version 2004 so if you installed it already, you will be able to notice it.

How can I delete the contents of the Downloads folder?

Although they removed the folder from Disk Cleanup, Microsoft didn’t remove it from Storage Sense, the built-in storage management feature from Windows 10.

So if you still want to delete the files from the Downloads folder, perform the next steps:

  • Open the Settings app by clicking on the Windows button and then clicking on the cogwheel above the Power button.
  • Now click on System and then on Storage from the left pane.
  • Next, click on Temporary files. Wait until the list gets populated.
  • In the next screen, scroll down and check the Downloads folder, go up again and click on the Remove files button.

Before you do this for the first time, you should back-up your data first using OneDrive or any other method you see fit.
