Microsoft Teams has more in-store for you. The app has been relentless in bringing change and improving how people communicate since the start of the pandemic. 

  • Microsoft Teams on the web will soon require you to enable device permissions.The move is to make the popular Microsoft teams app more secure.Both desktop and mobile versions of the app require approval for every app.

With recent updates such as accessing Teams files offline and a new Teams phone on the horizon, this new change will help businesses move in the right direction with more security in place.

Now, Microsoft is set to bring forth a new Teams feature that is already present in the mobile and desktop versions. Soon, you will have to enable permissions on a per-app basis in Teams.

According to Microsoft, this will enhance security Teams whenever other apps ask for permission to use the devices such as microphones, webcams, and location data.

Opt-in permissions

Users who wish to take advantage of this new security feature will have to opt-in. You will usually see your camera or microphone requesting access whenever you want to use them. Now, you will manually opt-in.

Coming soon

Microsoft added the feature to the Microsoft 365 roadmap just a few days ago, on November 19, and is scheduled to reach the general public in February 2022.

“In order to better secure Microsoft Teams third-party applications that request native device permissions – such as camera, microphone or location access – we will be requiring users to manually opt-in for these permissions per app in the Microsoft Teams web browser experience,” states the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. “We are already doing this on the Teams desktop and mobile clients.”

The date is not yet confirmed, and the date is subject to change since the Microsoft 365 Roadmap only lists the plans for future features and not release dates.
